Here’s an interesting verse of scripture found in Hebrews 10:23. “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
I read a book once by a famous Christian author by the name of Josh McDowell, of Campus Crusade for Christ and one particular chapter made plenty of sense to me (I think the book was “More Than A Carpenter). I believe that the chapter was called “Liar, Lunatic, or Lord!”
I’m paraphrasing the chapter but I remember the jest of it so indulge me, please:
If Jesus Christ, the person who’s claim was to be the Son of God, the One who died a gruesome death on a Roman cross, the One who was buried and “supposedly” rose from the dead, lied about this entire event, He made it all up, then we Christians have been following a scoundrel. This would be a person not worthy to be trusted with “taking out the trash” once a week. In fact, we would refer to Him as a “LIAR!”
What if He was just a “loon?” A nut-job. Unstable in His mind and full of outlandish stories of Him, His Father, and the Holy Spirit, not to mention what He would be capable of doing for us in eternity. What if His story is just so far out in the universe that you just could never conceive of “wrapping your head” around His story as truth? Well, I suppose at that point we would consider Him a “Lunatic!”
Then suppose one day as you are sitting in the comfort of your own living room, watching TV, listening to the radio, or perhaps reading a book (maybe the Bible) and what if, while you are reading the Bible, a voice speaks to your heart and conveniences you that He is NOT a Liar, He is NOT a Lunatic, but He is the “Lord?” The Savior of the world! What do you do with that? You have to do something or you start considering yourself as a Lunatic!
What do you do then? Well I think that you “…hold onto the confession of your faith” without the wavering of your past, because you have just been told by God Himself that Jesus IS the way, Jesus IS the truth, Jesus IS the life (Jn. 14;6) and His promise has been made faithful by His death on the cross and His resurrection. And there are thousands upon thousands of people willing to testify to these facts! Just some food for thought! So think about it.
